Abstract

The purpose of the publication: to consider the specifics of public purpose and determination of the profile of museums in the system of higher pedagogical adult education (institutes of postgraduate pedagogical education).
Research Methodology. Based on a case study of the «Education of Vinnytsia Region» museum at the Vinnytsia Academy of Continuing Education, the study investigates the features of museum functioning within specialized adult education institutions.
Results. The scientific-research function of museums in the system of adult higher pedagogical education is diminishing, as adult students aim to improve their qualifications mainly in subject competencies; therefore, the informational potential of the museum is more often used in an applied context. The educational component of museums, which is generally important in pedagogical education, is also losing its relevance, since the creation of auxiliary materials for the museum a priori is not a priority for adult students. Instead, the importance of museums as representative units capable of showcasing the past and present of the educational institution and the educational environment is increasing. And depending on the mission and vision of the museum it is possible to form it mostly as either pedagogical or historical. However, this does not exclude the existence of a museum with another profile, depending on the available collections.
Novelty. First, the experience of the «Education of Vinnytsia Region» museum at the Vinnytsia Academy of Continuing Education is analyzed. Second, the specifics of the functioning of museums in the higher pedagogical education system for adults are considered. Third, the representative functions of museums in modern higher education institutions are recognized.
The practical significance. Self-determination of the public purpose of the museum and its profile will help to use the material resources of the higher education institution for the future development of such structural units.
