Abstract

The article is dedicated to the exploration of European and domestic traditions in the context of different interpretations of the name of the same musical instrument. Specifically, in the European tradition, it is labeled as a «button accordion», contrasting with its domestic counterpart – the «bayan». The goal of the article is to investigate, based on historical materials, the characteristics of the emergence process and the distribution area of the bayan/button accordion through the prism of a cultural approach extrapolated through the work of E. Hobsbawm and T. Ranger's «invention of tradition» to determine a universal definition of the musical instrument. For the first time in the history of Ukrainian musical culture, articulation (statement) of the problem regarding the labeling of the «bayan» instrument in domestic discourse as a «button accordion» is carried out, in line with European tradition. The relevance of the chosen topic is substantiated, driven by the necessity to comprehend the historical truth regarding the origin and name of the instrument and enable terminological unification with the European interpretation – «button accordion». The evolution of the emergence and formation of the
musical instrument in both domestic and European traditions is analyzed. The discourse regarding the established, universally accepted name of the instrument «bayan» is noted based on the research potential of Ukrainian and foreign scholars.
