Keywords: Serge Lifar, ballet master, choreographer, ballet, Grand Opera.

Abstract

We have studied the contribution of Ukrainian ballet master, choreographer and pedagogue Serge Lifar to the Ukrainian and world art of dance. We have analyzed his creative path and proved his substantial contribution to the world art of dance. We have underlined the importance of his innovative approach to the stage productions of that time, organizing skills that helped him work with Grand Opеra ballet during a rather hard historical period. We have outlined the special features of his work that are called the “neoclassics” of ballet (The Fall of Icarus, Suite in White). He has staged over 200 ballets and has been an art director of Grand Opera for almost three decades. Despite the fact that the artist had lived most of his life abroad, he considered himself a Ukrainian and rejected an offer to become a citizen of France.
