Abstract

The article examines the transformation of costume design in the context of a transition to regulatory-driven sustainability, where the requirements of ecodesign and the circular economy structure the logic of design decisions and their evaluation criteria. The study substantiates the feasibility of considering aesthetic harmony as a design factor in shaping the life cycle of clothing, ensuring alignment between artistic and compositional parameters and the requirements of durability, repairability, and reuse. A conceptual model is proposed linking the aesthetic characteristics of a product to the user’s affective perceptions and behavioral practices that influence the duration of garment use.
Purpose – to substantiate the aesthetic harmony of costume as a design factor in shaping the life cycle of clothing under the conditions of regulatory constraints of sustainable design. Methodology is based on a conceptual-analytical approach, as well as on systemic and interdisciplinary synthesis (design, consumer psychology, policy studies), and on the operationalization of aesthetic and behavioral categories. Results consist of the development of a conceptual model describing causal relationships: «regulatory constraints – aesthetic harmony – affect – behavioral practices – durability – circularity», and defining indicators for their assessment at the design level of construction, materials, and composition. Scientific novelty lies in substantiating aesthetic harmony as a measurable design variable that integrates artistic and compositional decisions into the system of life-cycle design for clothing. Practical significance lies in the possibility of applying the proposed indicators and criteria to the development of clothing with an extended life cycle, the formulation of design briefs, and the adaptation of production to ecodesign requirements.
