LOCAL HISTORI RESEARCH OF THE PRIEST APOLLONIUS SENDULSKY

Abstract

Purpose: to analyse articles dedicated to the history of cities and villages of Volhynia, of priest Apollonius Sendulsky, and to determine his contribution to the development of historical local lore of the Volhynia region.
The methodological basis of the study was the works of leading specialists in historical local history: A. Tarnovsky, M.P. Manko, L.V. Bazhenov, M.Yu. Kostrytsa.
Results. The figure of Apollonius Sendulsky occupies a special place among the researchers who initiated the study of the history of cities and villages of the Volyn region. The objectivity, impartiality, and value of his local history research is due primarily to the fact that they use a huge array of historical sources, works by domestic and foreign historians of the 18 th
and 19 th centuries, medieval chroniclers, chronicles, published documents from archives, and manuscript documents that
were kept at that time in churches, monasteries, and private individuals and that have already been lost today. This encourages
modern scholars to use the local history heritage of A. Sendulsky when writing the history of the cities and villages of Volyn.
If you add up the pages of all 44 local history essays published by A. Sendulsky, you will get a fundamental monograph of 670 pages. Local history studies, which were initiated by the Holy Synod in line with the policy of Russification of the population of Volyn, turned out to be the other side of the coin. Encouraging people to learn about the history of their land, they developed a sense of patriotism, national identity, and the uniqueness of the Ukrainian people.
Novelty. For the first time, a comprehensive analysis of articles devoted to the history of cities and villages of Volhynia, by one of the founders of Volhynian historical local history, Apollonius Sendulsky, was made, and documentary sources of his research were identified. His life and creative path have been traced, a document from the Sendulsky family archive has been introduced into scientific circulation, and his significant contribution to the study of the history of Volhynia has been proven.
The practical significance of this study is that the its results can be used for further research into historical local history, in teaching a course on the history of Ukraine, and in writing scientific papers.
