Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine the peculiarities of the musical language of the pieces for large orchestra «Becoming another» and «Still/Motion» by Huang Ruo in terms of their genre and style profile and the principles of embodying certain ideas of Chinese philosophy.
Research methodology. It was analyzed a lot of major publications on this topic. The principles of historical and cultural approach, stylistic analysis, structural method were used.
Results. The article examines the programme orchestral works by the contemporary Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo. The importance of studying such works as evidence of direct intercultural interactions in contemporary art is noted. It is found that in the works for orchestra by Huang Ruo, Chinese musical traditions and philosophical views are fused
with current compositional techniques, as exemplified by the opuses «Becoming Another» and «Still / Motion» for large orchestra. It has been established that the deep semantic basis of these works is the philosophical pair of concepts Yin – Yang, which is considered a manifestation of Chinese dualistic thinking of the dialectical type. It has been determined that the basis of the musical events of «Becoming another» is the transition from Yin to Yang, realised in the continuous transformation of sound material, while the basis of «Still / Motion» is the demonstration of the dual relations of various musical parameters, which, coexisting in a simultaneous reality, create a unique sound space of the work.
The novelty of the work lies in the involvement of music that have not yet been studied and a new philosophical perspective on the problem.
Practical significance. Results of this issue may be useful for Ukrainian and Chinese musicology in studying the peculiarities of orchestral music of modern Chinese composers.
