The article reveals the degree of knowledge of the Ukrainian traditional shirt as an important element of the national system in the scientific works of domestic scientists. The academic literature analyzed in the publication was considered in two chronological periods: 1) the second half of XIX – 1922, when the study of the spiritual and material culture of Ukrainians formed and developed in a separate direction of scientific (mainly ethnographic) activity; 2) 1923–1990 (the period of the USSR), when the study of the folk costume of the Ukrainians stood out in a separate ethno-artistic direction.
