ECLECTICISM IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL PREMISES IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19 TH – EARLY 20 TH CENTURY

The aim of this paper is to rethink the dynamics of renewal and filling with new meanings, the significance of the eclectic approach to interior design of residential premises and its practical implementation in Europe in the second half of the 19 th – early 20 th centuries and in Ukraine based on the analysis of interior descriptions in the works of Ukrainian writers. Research methodology. Twenty major publications on the subject (monographs, articles in foreign and domestic scientific journals) were analyzed. Results. The study revealed that the use of an eclectic approach in the design of Ukrainian residential interiors for the general population in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries demonstrates Ukraine's affiliation with the trends in European architectural, artistic, and design practices of that time, which reflected the established order of universal and individual values and taste preferences of European society at that time. The phenomenological approach to the study of styles is an effective tool for analyzing eclecticism. Novelty.
The article examines the peculiarities of the formation and dynamics of the development of the eclectic approach in the interior design of residential premises, and explores eclecticism as an aesthetic and intellectual tradition of the second half of the 19 th and early 20 th centuries in Western Europe and Ukraine. Practical significance. The results of the article can be used for further research into the phenomenology of eclecticism.
