Keywords: pictorial document, museum object, museum studies, documentary science, monumentology.

Abstract

Theoretical substantiation of the concept of «visual document» as a part of the concept of «museum object» was accomplished. It has been studied that the concept of original «visual document» is a constituent part of the concept of «museum object». The research of original visual documents was made, the problems of their functioning and registration were classified and identified. A number of publications were analyzed, in which the theoretical aspects of the study of individual visual documents by the employees of the National Library of Ukraine named after V. I. Vernadsky of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is partially considered.
Relevance of the problem. Multi-facetedness and multi-aspect of the problem led to the appearance of a significant number of scientific publications directly or indirectly related to the research topic. These are scientific works of general document studies, monument studies, art studies, history of industry book publishing activity and industry document studies.
Scientific novelty. The concepts of «museum object», «visual document» and «visual publication» are considered and distinguished. An artistic document includes information of an artistic direction and is separated from the category of «visual document», which is a generalization for visual documents and documents with images of a natural and technical direction.
Visual publications are represented by printed documents, in the main part of which the means of visual arts are used. It was determined that original pictorial documents (published and unpublished) are the source base in the process of research and use of pictorial content information. To improve the display of unpublished pictorial documents in search engines in Ukraine and to provide a wider opportunity to use the original pictorial documents to the custodians of such resources museums, libraries, etc. it is necessary to gradually transfer the original documents into electronic versions for a qualitative replenishment of bibliographic information on fine arts and its distribution within the country and abroad.
It was determined that the original works of painting belong to the object of the bibliography. That is, the object of the bibliography can only be published documents from the standardized scope of the concept of «document», including printed works of fine art (mainly in the form of fine art publications) and reproductions of works of fine art (in particular, graphic, pictorial, sculptural, architectural, etc.). Original works of fine art should also include those that existed at the previous stage during the creation of the works of art themselves – these are sketches, esquisses, trial graphic prints, etc., which were not represented in the external environment and remained for preservation in archives, libraries, museums, etс. This allows them to be classified as original unpublished visual documents.
Original pictorial documents are part of the broader concept of «museum object» and can be the object of research not only in document studies or bibliographic studies, but also in art studies, museum studies, etc.
