THE ROLE OF ETHNIC CULTURE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF UKRAINIAN ENTERTAINMENT CULTURE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19 TH – EARLY 20 TH CENTURY

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the principles of interaction of the ethnic and entertainment culture in Ukraine 19th – early 20th centuries and determination of the main role of folk music, which is confirmed by different entertainment projects (including music theater) in our country during this period. Research methodology. Historical method – for understanding the specifics of the interaction of ethnic and spectacular culture; systemic – for determine periods of development of the pop culture; analysis and synthesis – for find normality in the interaction of the pop and ethnic culture. Novelty. It was found that the authors' interest in folk culture has a reverse movement – from urban lyric and dances to archaic ritual samples. Pop culture 20 th century is derived from entertainment culture 19 th century. Results. The interaction of ethno-and pop culture has a periodization that coincides with the main periodization of mass culture, because the folklore factor is immanent. The folk song is an integral part of entertainment culture, it was popular in different arrangements for professional and amateur performance. M. Lysenko's opera «Natalka Poltavka» is an example: its musical numbers quickly became popular, significant printed editions and sales of gramophone records confirm this.

The article analyzes the principles of the interaction of ethnic and entertainment culture of the second half of the 19 th – early 20 th centuries, where national popular culture was formed. The folk song and dances was the feature of this period: arrangements and composer adaptations were included in popular theater performances. Using the example theatrical performances of «Natalka Poltavka» by I. Kotlyarevsky in different years, it is demonstrated which folk songs were used, as well as which numbers were written in the style of folklore during the 19 th century. Different entertainment events were also accompanied by folk music, stylized works that quickly became popular («Dyvlius’ ya na nebo» by L. Aleksandrova, «Viyut’ vitry» by M. Churay, «Handzya» by D. Bonkovs’ky, «Nich yaka misyachna» by M. Lysenko ect).
