VOCAL COMPOSITIONS IN THE FILM «THE HUSSAR’S WOOING» (BASED ON M. NEKRASOV’S VAUDEVILLE «PETERSBURG MONEYLENDER») : DRAMATURGICAL ASPECT

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify, on the basis of analysis of musical and artistic and performing characteristics of vocal compositions in the film «Hussar’s Wooing» (1979), their correlation to the dramaturgy, and to define their role in the plot and imagery of the movie.

Research methodology. The article uses general scientific approaches and methods: analytical, comparative; a special part is made by specific musical-theoretical methods: musical-performing, analysis of musical forms and vocal-technical analysis.

Results. Based on the analysis of musical and artistic and performing characteristics of vocal compositions in the movie «Hussar’s Wooing» (1979, directed by S. Druzhinina), it was concluded that the placement of the vocal numbers in attitude to the art spaces of the movie, is similar, namely that they are in diegetic space; there is a complete connection between the vocal numbers and the compositional elements of the film; there is а musical leitmotif that synthesizing the lyrical message of the movie (a stanza from the duet «Three Doves») is used throughout the film; the vocal numbers in the film represent different artistic areas of the picture (lyrical, grotesque-comedic, grotesque-dramatic, genre). In our opinion, the main dramaturgical aim of the vocal parts of «The Hussar’s Wooing» (1979) is a bright capacious concentrated revelation and demonstration of the characters' artistic image, their emotional state, which determines the primary role of vocal compositions in the plot-shaped conception of the film.

Novelty. The article reveals the relationship of vocal compositions in «The Hussar’s Wooing » (1979) to the play-acting, and determines their role in the narrative and figurative structure of the movie.

The practical significance. The article contains information that is useful for professional representatives of the spheres of music and cinema art in terms of improving their vocal and artistic performance.
