MODIFICATION OF THE CITY THEME IN THE VISUAL ART OF WESTERN UKRAINE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Abstract
Artistic interpretation of urban space is seen as an interpretation of an artistic text that reflects the emergence of new meanings and meanings, depending on the recipient. The analyzed sources are selected on the principle of declaring the themes of the city as «metaphors of consciousness», respectively, the artistic interpretation of urban space is considered as an interpretation of the artistic text that reflects the emergence of new meanings and meanings dependent on the recipient. In the works of artists of the 1950 s, metaphors of the city of illusion, delusion, islands, urban utopia generated by the aesthetics of avant-garde were noted. Creative reflections of the 1960 s focus on the themes of silent resistance, russification and lumpenization; 1980 s – loneliness of the artist, heterotopia. It is noted that visual works tend to intermediality as a literary principle of the concept.
The study uses the methodological principles of Cultural Studies, which postulate culture as an area of social diversity and struggle. Accordingly, cultural research is defined as an intellectual and political tradition in academic disciplines, in terms of theoretical paradigms or on the basis of relevant research objects. The technique of flannel contemplation is defined as an example of an artist in the context of a passer-by, who forms a fragmentary image of the city. The empirical basis of the study were visual works by Western Ukrainian artists, in which the theme of the city is a bright marker of the marginal environments of Western Ukrainian cities of 1970-1980.
Conclusions. As it was proved, the visual art of Western Ukraine in the second half of the twentieth century, despite the biased «peasantry», turns to the thematics of current urban planning. Visual images that are texts of the city, created on the basis of material signs. Starting from the flannel model of reflection, artists of different generations declared the feeling of the city as a creation of a model of the world as a whole.The theme of the city appears simultaneously in the formats of «open art» and counterculture, proving the dependence of the text of the city on the social context and the author's interpretation. The current vision, accordingly, delegates the social message to the material urban structure. The aesthetic image of the city reflects the fear of society, the loneliness of the artist, the structuring of «his» and «foreign», idealizes the city, denoting its aesthetic value, or gives this value the qualities of an archetype. In the context of the study, palimpsest reveals its nature by strategic means of accessibility of the individual urban experiences expression.
