The aim of the research is to analyze the cityscape genre in Ukrainian art of the early 20 th century through the lens of
modernist and avant-garde artistic strategies, to identify the features of the image of the city, and to determine its role in reflecting socio-cultural transformations and the formation of national identity. Methodology of the research. The study relies
on an interdisciplinary approach, combining cultural studies with formal-stylistic analysis of the artworks, semiotics analysis,
and comparative analysis. The works of Ukrainian artists are examined through the lens of modernist and avant-garde artistic
strategies, with attention to the transformation of the image of the city and its socio-cultural meanings.
Results. The article examines the cityscape genre across a spectrum of artistic and cultural transformations: from
modernist reinterpretations of reality to avant-garde deconstructions of traditional representation. It highlights the role of urban imagery in articulating socio-cultural processes and shaping national identity. The study revealed that Ukrainian artists
developed distinctive artistic responses to European modernism, synthesizing innovations with national cultural traditions.
The novelty of the research lies in the interpretation of the image of the city as a cultural code and a means of constructing national identity within the context of Ukrainian modernism and avant-garde. The article also identifies the transformation of the artistic and ideological dimensions of the cityscape genre from early modernism to the avant-garde of the 1920 s. The practical value. The results of this study contribute to ongoing research on Ukrainian modernism and the avant-garde and may inform teaching in art history, cultural studies, and urban studies. Furthermore, the study provides a foundation for the development of educational materials and curricula focused on modernist and avant-garde visual practices.
