The aim. Wang Yidong is one of the most influential painters in modern China. He skillfully combined the well-known
artistic achievements of Western classical oil painting with the aesthetic achievements of Chinese traditional fine art culture and
created his own unique artistic style. His works captivate with their simplicity, professionalism, artistic charm, are distinguished
by sophisticated skill, expressiveness of form, and the ability to depict the rich and complex inner world of characters. The color
scheme and manner of execution of Van Idun's female portraits are exceptionally original. Chinese artists and art critics try to
explain in their publications the meaning and effect of color on the viewer. We read about this in numerous theoretical, arthistorical,
and empirical studies. In the 21 st century, not only in China, but throughout the art world, science is actively
researching the differentiation of color systems, their practical application, the creation of color theories, the study of the
mechanisms of the connection between color and the human psyche, etc. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that it first
identifies the role of red in Wang Yidong's female portraits in the context of the development of modern Chinese painting. The
purpose of the presented scientific research is to clarify the meaning of the use of red in Van Idun's female portraits.
Results. It was found out that the cultural and historical tradition of China, representing the life, way of thinking, and
mental traits of the Chinese people, had a powerful influence on the artist's pictorial work. Based on the analysis, it was
determined that the use of red in Wang Yidong's female portraits symbolizes a joyful event, good luck, power or fame, youth,
health, and beauty. The artist's painting represents a wide range of emotions of the person portrayed. It was revealed that
cultural reflections associated with the presence of red color in the works of the artist are deep and understandable in Chinese
fine arts. It is proved that the author's interpretation of color can play an important role in the intercultural communication
between the artist and the viewer. It was found that in China at the end of the 20 th century realistic oil painting is developing
rapidly, and over the past two decades has taken a leading position in the painting of the Celestial Empire.
Novelty. Wang Yidong is a prominent representative of modern Chinese oil painting and one of the founders of the
realistic school of painting. The artist's work is strongly influenced by the tradition of China, which encompasses the lifestyle
and way of thinking, and mental traits of the Chinese people. In Wang Yidong's female portraits, the color red most often has
the following meanings: it is a symbol of joyful events; it is associated with a certain emotion; it is a symbol of youth, health,
and beauty; it is a symbol of good luck, fame, and power. It can be argued that the cultural reflections associated with the
color red are quite deep and understandable for Chinese culture. The artist's interpretation of color and the communication of
his understanding to the viewer can also play an important role in cross-cultural communication. A correct understanding of
the metaphor of «red» in Chinese culture through the interpretation of the color red in Wang Yidong's female portraits can
help foreigners better communicate with the Chinese
