Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
The submission file is a document in *.doc or *.rtf format (Microsoft Word 2003).
Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
The text is one and a half line-spaced; uses a 14-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VOLUME OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES, REPORTS, OPINIONS AND REVIEWS

Articles by collection headings – up to 17 pages (including annotations, tables, graphs and a list of used literature); scientific report – up to 5 pages; review or review – up to 3 pages. Articles larger in volume may be accepted for consideration based on the decision of the editorial board.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ARTICLE MANUSCRIPT

The text of the article is executed only in *.doc or *.rtf format

The author's ORCID iD must be added to the article.

Page parameters:

A4 format;
orientation – portrait;
margins:
upper and lower – 2 cm each;
right - 3 cm; left - 1.5 cm
font – Times New Roman;
font size – 14;
line spacing – 1.5;
paragraph indentation – 1.25 cm.

The UDC is printed on the left, the title of the article in capital letters (bold) in the center, and the author's surname and initials in the right margin. Abstracts, title of the article, author's surname and keywords are in English, Ukrainian (800-900 characters); and English (full page of A-4 format according to the appropriate sample), the list of references is also submitted in transliteration. Those made without taking into account the requirements of the article will not be considered.

Figures and tables must be submitted in the article immediately after the text, where they are mentioned for the first time. Each table, figure, graph in the text must have mandatory references. Formulas to which references are made are numbered with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right.

Only black and white images are printed in the collection. Color images in the article are placed on the collection's website if they have a certain informational value.

Authors of manuscripts must adhere to international nomenclatures.

The article must be accompanied by a review by a doctor of science. The requirements for annotations are given below.

Вивчення іноземних мов студентами немовних спеціальностей Великобританії

Наведено огляд публікацій, у яких досліджено кризу щодо викладання іноземних мов у Великобританії та способи її подолання. Розглянуто причини скорочення чисельності кафедр британських університетів, де студенти вивчають іноземну мову як основну спеціальність. Описано заходи, спрямовані на розвиток функціонального білінгвізму серед випускників вищих шкіл, зокрема, заохочення вивчення мов на факультативних курсах різного рівня акредитації та різної тривалості. Проаналізовано дані опитувань слухачів таких курсів. Виявлено, що більшість слухачів обирають кредитні курси або курси з правом одержання сертифікату. Окремо висвітлено роль університетських мовних центрів у забезпеченні викладання іноземних мов студентам немовних спеціальностей.

Non-specialist foreign language provision in Great Britain

This paper presents a review of publications exploring the crisis in foreign language teaching in Great Britain and the ways of overcoming it. The author investigates the causes of a reduction in the number of British university departments where foreign languages are taught as a major. The article also describes the measures aimed to develop functional bilingualism among university graduates, especially teaching languages at optional courses of various duration and accreditation status. Data from various surveys involving people attending such courses have been analysed. It appears that most of the students choose credit or certified courses. A particular attention is paid to the role of university language centres in teaching foreign languages to non-specialist students.

ОСНОВНИЙ ТЕКСТ СТАТТІ (заголовки підрозділів статті виділяються жирним шрифтом. Після назви підрозділу статті ставиться крапка і продовжується текст самої статті), відповідно до постанови президії ВАК України № 7-05/1 від 15.01.2003 р. «Про підвищення вимог до фахових видань, внесених до переліків ВАК України», повинен мати такі необхідні елементи: постановка проблеми; аналіз останніх досліджень та публікацій; мета статті; виклад основного матеріалу дослідження; висновки.

Постановка проблеми, її актуальність та зв'язок із важливими практичними завданнями, значення вирішення проблеми (5-10 рядків).
Останні дослідження та публікації, на які посилається автор, виокремлення невирішених раніше питань; частин загальної проблеми, яким присвячується означена стаття (ця частина статті становить 1/3 сторінки).
Мета статті (формулювання мети статті) – опис головної ідеї публікації, чим відрізняється, доповнює та поглиблює вже відомі підходи, які нові факти, закономірності висвітлює; вказаний розділ дуже важливий: з нього читач визначає корисність для себе запропонованої статті; мета статті відповідає постановці загальної проблеми й огляду раніше виконаних досліджень (обсяг цієї частини статті 5–10 рядків).
Виклад матеріалу дослідження головна частина статті, де висвітлюються основні положення дослідження, програма і методика експерименту, отримані результати та їх обґрунтування, виявлені закономірності, аналіз результатів, особистий внесок автора.
Висновки – основні підсумки, рекомендації, значення для теорії й практики, перспективи подальших досліджень.

СПИСОК ВИКОРИСТАНОЇ ЛІТЕРАТУРИ

(заголовок підрозділу виділяється жирним шрифтом, вирівнювання по центру сторінки, без абзацного відступу; власне список літератури – шрифт звичайний, вирівнювання по ширині сторінки, абзацний відступ).
Список використаної літератури виконується мовою оригіналу, розташовується в алфавітному порядку, має наскрізну нумерацію. Список літератури в англомовній версії статті подається мовою оригіналу (тобто укр., англ. тощо). Бібліографічний опис оформлюється згідно з dstu-8302-2015 «Система стандартів з інформації, бібліотечної та видавничої справи. Бібліографічний запис. Бібліографічний опис. Загальні вимоги та правила складання». Приклади оформлення бібліографічного опису літературних джерел наведено в «Бюлетені ВАК України». 2009. № 5. С. 26-30. Див. Додаток 5.

У списку літератури необхідно уникати посилань на російськомовну літературу.
У списку літератури до статей, на які посилається автор повинні бути додані DOI
Увага! Список використаної літератури має містити не менше 5 назв і не може складатися тільки з посилань на веб-сайти!
У Списку… слід уникати посилань на газети, виробничі журнали, навчальні посібники та власні публікації авторів. Посилання на неопубліковані роботи не дозволяються. За точність наведених у Списку.. даних відповідальність несуть автори.

NON-SPECIALIST FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROVISION IN GREAT BRITAIN

The aim of this paper is to explore the state of teaching foreign languages to non-specialist language students in the United Kingdom as well as the steps taken by British authoritites to overcome a crisis in this sector of higher education
Research methodology. Eight major publications on the subject (survey reports, scientific journal and newspaper articles) have been reviewed. Statistical data have been widely drawn from formal and informal surveys conducted by various higher education bodies in Great Britain.
Results. It has been found that the government, higher education and industry bodies of the United Kingdom are well aware of an «alarming shortage» of British people able to speak foreign languages. A number of steps have been taken with the aim of transforming the language teaching strategy at university level. While traditional modern languages departments at British universities are losing popularity, more attention is given to non-specialist language students. There is a strong tendency to adopt functional approach to language teaching concentrating on developing practical language skills rather than theoretical knowledge. In the case of students not majoring in linguistics, foreign languages are not a required part of the degree programme. However, students wishing to acquire linguistic skills may join one of the language courses at their university. The courses vary in duration and academic value. Teaching is provided by the staff of well-equipped university language centers.
Novelty. An attempt is made in this paper to show alternative ways of teaching foreign languages to non-specialist students differing from those adopted in the post- Soviet countries.
The practical significance. Ukrainian educators may find the information contained in this article useful for developing a new strategy of teaching foreign languages to non-specialist students.
