Abstract

The objective of the paper is to conduct the performance and interpretation analysis of Bohdana Froliak‘s work «Suite in C» for two pianos based on the genre of each part of the cycle and the peculiarities of the composer‘s worldview. Suite in C was originally created by the composer for the cello and piano (2008), with further author‘s translations for the cello and strings (2013) and for two pianos (2016). The active stage life of the suite by B. Froliak testifies to the great interest of the performers and the artistic value of the work.
The Suite in C is associated with the baroque examples of suite cycles, in which the parts are matched according to the principle of character contrast. Commencing with a dynamic Intrada, the suite proceeds with a deeply philosophical Romance, an extremely stormy Toccata, and a full of inner light Nocturne. Research methodology is based on a combination of the following research methods: analytical method was used when processing the sheet music text; the method of interviewing was applied to trace the history and inspiration of the
creation of the work; musicological method contributed to the analysis of the Suite by Bohdana Froliak as an example of individual performance interpretation; typological method was employed when characterizing the stage life of the composer‘s versions of the work.
The results consist in formulating the performance and interpretation objectives, in the description of the figurative content that results from its programmatic intent which is embedded in the genres of the parts of the cycle, and from the dedication to the memory of I. Sonevytskyi.
The novelty consists in the first presentation of the interpretive analysis of the Suite in C for two pianos by Bogdana Froliak.
Practical significance. The materials and conclusions of the article can be used by performers who want to add the Suite in C to their repertoire, by teachers who plan to study this work in a piano duet class, as well as in studying the history of Ukrainian piano art in art institutions.
