FUNCTIONARIES OF CONTEMPORARY UKRAINIAN ART MARKET, THE PRIVATE ART SEGMENT
Abstract
The purpose of the proposed publication is to study the activities of the private art segment of Ukrainian art. The main methodological approach in determining the role of the main players of the modern Ukrainian art market in regulating the development of Ukrainian art is the structural-system approach, and in analyzing the activities of cultural institutions, curators, gallery owners and art dealers and their cooperation with artists – the contextual method. The applied methods allowed to determine the main vectors of development of the private art segment of Ukrainian art of the 1990–2020 s. The scientific novelty of the work lies in understanding the role of the main players of the modern Ukrainian art market in the regulation of the processes of development of Ukrainian art. Today, the art world has transformed from a closed privileged industry to a full-fledged global art industry. To understand the processes of development of the private art market in Ukraine, first of all it is necessary to understand the work of the world art industry, which today, as the analysis of the world and Ukrainian art markets showed, is in a state of formation. Galleries, contemporary art centers and auction houses are now focused primarily on private sales and promotion of contemporary artists, collaborating and complementing each other. Conclusions. Conservatism and closeness of the Ukrainian art market in the XXI century, in contrast to the world art space, its ingrained fear of change, due to a narrow circle of officials and limited demand. Usually all art market officials take into account aspects of the historical development of art, knowledge and understanding of what has been done in the past, and when using quotes or repetitions – understand the coordinate system. They have experience of viewing art, understanding what is happening in the art world «here and now», experience trends, are in a global artistic context, take into account certain social challenges, interpret visual communication with potential audiences, have their own strategies and understanding of their activities. These aspects may intersect and complement each other, however, a certain general direction of officials determines whether a common coordinate system will be formed in the art market.
