THE EVOLUTION OF PAINTING MANNER IN THE PORTRAITS OF ADALBERT ERDELYI

Abstract

This article presents a review of publications in which researchers touched upon the analysis of portrait painting by Adalbert Erdelyi. A few of portraits from every period of creativity are considered. Factors that contributed to the change of artistic manner of painter in the genre of portrait are described. A formal analysis of several previously unpublished paintings was made and the dates of creation of two portraits and one sculpture were specified. It is revealed what features are characteristic of each stage of the artist`s work. At the beginning of his career, he turned to grayish-brown shades. In the 1920s, the artist`s palette boldly places bright accents on a dull background, writing becomes freer, he begins to generalize forms. In the 1930s, A. Erdely user the method of structural painting by P. Cezanne, raises the decorativeness of canvases with planes of open colors, tends even more to generalization and stylization. In his later work, the artist was forced to hide his work due to accusations of formalism.
