The aim of the study is to identify and systematize the key stages in the evolution of Ukrainian book design within the context of forming the national cultural code. This made it possible to outline the stable visual markers of Ukrainian identity, trace their manifestations in historical and contemporary editions, and determine their potential as tools of cultural representation of Ukraine in the global communication space. Methodology. The research is based on a comprehensive approach that combines
historical-artistic, comparative, and cultural analysis. The study draws upon the works of Ukrainian and international scholars,
examines historical examples of book graphics, and analyzes contemporary design practices. Results. The study reveals a multistage development of Ukrainian book design: from the synthesis of folk art and avant-garde movements of the early
twentieth century (Boichukism, Narbut school), through the dominance of socialist realist practices during the Soviet period, to
the revival of national graphics and typographic experimentation in the second half of the twentieth century. The modern stage is characterized by stylistic plurality and the integration of digital technologies with traditional design elements. The main identity markers include ornamental compositions, symbolic imagery (Tree of Life, Cossack figures), historical typographic forms (ustav, skoropys), and the incorporation of decorative and applied arts such as embroidery, paper cutting, and ceramics into book design.
Scientific novelty. For the first time, the evolution of Ukrainian book design is comprehensively analyzed through the lens of its role as a component of the national cultural code.
Practical significance. The results of the study can be applied in publishing and design practice to create printed works
with a distinct national identity. The systematization of cultural markers provides a methodological framework for designers,
illustrators, and publishers, and forms a basis for further research in the field of visual culture and cultural policy.
