The aim of the study is to analyze the specifics of comics as a product of contemporary popular culture, visual
art, and graphic design, as well as to examine the peculiarities of conceptual research in the creation of authorial
comics. Methodology: comparative analysis, induction, deduction, and hermeneutics were used to identify a range of
opinions about comics as a special publication; the principle of “incomplete understanding of the object” was applied,
given the complexity of evaluating such a design product due to differences in subject matter and artistic design.
Results: the spectrum of arguments put forward by Ukrainian and foreign scholars regarding the specifics of form
creation and artistic design in comics, as well as their varieties, has been clarified. Scientific novelty: the features of
conceptual research in the design development of author comics were studied, and the need to use the methodological
principle of incomplete understanding of the object when working on this problem was noted in order to develop the
theoretical and methodological basis of their research in design theory, aesthetics, and art education. The practical
significance of this research lies in the fact that it draws attention to the need for a more in-depth understanding of the
role of aesthetics in the publication of comics and their visual content, as this will contribute to improving the aesthetic
competence of graphic designers involved in the creation of comics.
