Abstract

Relevance of the problem. The creative activity of the choir conductor, teacher, musical and public figure Volodymyr
Klymkiv (1926–2000) from Canada, which was aimed at learning about Ukrainian choral culture and promoting it in the
world, is considered. The purpose of the study is to present Volodymyr Klymkiv as an example of creative self-realization of
the individual in art. Research methodology. The work uses a complex of methods of universal, general scientific and specific
nature: the method of scientific reconstruction – to recreate the picture of the artistic and educational process based on source
materials; source and empirical-theoretical – for the study and analysis of the historical-biographical and cultural-artistic
factual basis of the research; the method of objectivity and historicism – to take into account historical conditions and reflect
the main stages of the formation and development of V. Klymkiv’s artistic activity; socio-cultural and retrospectiveevolutionary – to reproduce the stages of the artist's activity in the field of choral art and the cultural determinants of his
formation and development as a creative personality; system-structural analysis – to identify characteristic individual and
personal features of V. Klymkiv’s activities at different stages of his life; systematization and generalization – to determine
objective patterns that characterize the specifics of the interaction of the artist's activities with various aspects of the cultural
and artistic life of Ukraine and Canada in the 20 th century; cultural personology, historical and biographical – to build a
model of his creative personality. Results. The successful strategy of self-realization of V. Klymkiv’s creative personality took
place under the influence of the cultural and educational environment of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada, training and
communication with leading choral conductors Oleksandr Koshyts and Pavlo Matsenko, internship with the outstanding
conductor Anatoly Avdievsky in Kyiv, fifty years of practical activity with the O. Koshyts choir, concert and tour trips around
the world, the realization of numerous sound recordings; was provided by the artist's self-education and high self-organization.
Novelty. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time the creative personality of Volodymyr
Klymkiv is understood as an example of self-realization in art.The practical significance. Information about him can be used
in lectures the history of Ukrainian choral music.
