THE MUSICAL BY ODESA AUTHORS «QUEEN OLHA» AS A MODERN VERSION OF SPREADING UKRAINIAN CULTURE

Abstract

Statement of the problem. The development of musical-theatrical art in the early 21st century is characterized by the dominance of the genre – the musical. The number of productions and popularity once again confirm that the musical not only has not exhausted its potential as a synthetic multi-genre model of contemporary musical theater, but certainly has
great prospects for its development, which determines the relevance of the stated topic.
The purpose of the article is to review the main trends in the development and established traditions of the Ukrainian musical in the 21 st century, as well as to represent the personalities of contemporary authors of this genre through the example of the musical «Queen Olha».
The methodological basis for this research includes the following approaches: the historical-cultural approach, which allowed for the identification of the specific development of contemporary musical-theatrical culture during the specified period. The key methods employed were descriptive and comparative analysis.
Results. The musical «Queen Olha», which premiered on August 30, 2023, at the Odesa Academic Theater of Musical Comedy named after M. Vodyanyi, became a landmark event in the modern musical and theatrical culture of Odesa and Ukraine as a whole. Using the example of the musical, the authors set themselves the task of not only creating a commercial performance but also creating a Ukrainian product that reproduces its own unique national color, based on national history, the Ukrainian language, and Ukrainian musical heritage.
Undoubtedly, the musical «Queen Olha» correlating with the contemporary social context and combining traditional and innovative approaches, is a large-scale project that accumulates the key trends of modern non-academic musical culture.
The practical significance. The practical value of the work lies in the possibility of using materials in the courses «Musical cultural studies», «History of Contemporary Musical Theater».
