THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES OF INTONATION: A LOOK IN THE MUSIC SCIENCES HISTORY
Abstract
The aim of the article is to create conceptual bases of intonation through the prism of musical-psychological approaches, revealed in the history of musicological representations, reaching ancient musical-philosophical systems and concerning modern scientific views on the specified phenomenon.
Research methodology. The methodology of the study is based on the understanding that the essence of the process of intonation is the effect of tonal tension, which undoubtedly ensures the accuracy and purity of sound, while modern musicological view of intonation sees as this phenomenon not only a sequence of sounds but also a single sound, sonor as the same tension and discharge at the micro level or in another sound space. In the process of research a number of musical and psychological concepts are analysed. In particular, the explanation of the psychological root causes of intonation can be seen in the concept of «emotional and psychological code» by V. Levy. It resonates with Spencer's idea of the role of the intonation factor in the origin of musical art. It consists in the fact that this or that sound and the combination of sounds that make up the intonations are correlated with certain emotions.
Important attention is also paid to the concept of N. Schneider, which substantiates the «emotional-intonational color» or «coloring of emotional tension». As a result, intonation is interpreted as a process, the essence of which is the effect of tonal stress, which undoubtedly ensures the accuracy and purity of sound, and not only as a sequence of sounds, and also a single sound, sonora, as the same voltage and discharge at the micro level or in other sound space.
Novelty. The novelty of this study is based on the fact that today’s look at the retrospective of musicological ideas allows us to identify new facets of understanding these phenomena and comprehend them from the standpoint of their undoubted benefits for performance and pedagogy, which we see multiple prospects for future research on this topic. The practical significance. The results of the research can be used in future musical-psychological research and in teaching musical intonation in the educational process.
