THE ROLE OF POLYCHROME PAINTINGS IN THE INTERIOR SPACE DESIGN OF CHURCHES (AS BASED ON THE EXAMPLE OF MONUMENTAL MURALS BY MODEST SOSENKO)
Abstract
We have reviewed the experience and tendencies of designing interior spaces in the sacred architecture of the first quarter of the XX century and investigated the figurative and stylistic features of this new type of multifunctional public spaces in the contemporary society in which the analytical and historiographic basis ensures provisioning of the new forms of spiritual activity and improving the conceptual and aesthetic erudition of a person; analyzed the peculiarities of forming the sacred interior depending on its purpose and processes being held in it; elaborated the classification of theological infrastructure taking into account the monumental murals by Modest Sosenko (1875–1920) in the specific church interiors; and determined the connection between figurative, stylistic, and functional components in the context of forming the spatial environment as based on the specific principle of «hierotopy».
