MYKHAYLO BOYCHUK ARTIST ROUTS: LVIV PERIOD (1910–1914)

Abstract

The article deals with the creative work of the outstanding Ukrainian artist-monumentalist Mykhaylo Boychuk in 1910-1914 (Lviv period). The author analyses the artistic and stylistic, compositional and formal features of the artist’s works. The importance of the tradition in the work of Mykhaylo Boychuk is revealed, the individuality of the master and his characteristic are outlined features. Attention is concentrated on the monumental and easel works of Mykhaylo Boychuk in Lviv period. A great importance for enlightening the artist’s creative way is the definition of the historical, cultural, artistic and aesthetic principles of neobyzantism – the direction established by Mykhaylo Boychuk. It was fully formed during the Lviv period, and in Kiev has reached its prosperity in the domain of Ukrainian monumental art and was named «boychukizm». The sources of individual painting, pedagogical, scientific and theoretical methods of the artist are outlined; museum-restoration, collector's and public activities are analysed; the contextual influence of Lviv (Ukrainian) and Western European cultural and artistic environments on the formation of the world-view system Mykhaylo Boychuk is determined. The influence of the cultural and artistic environment of Lviv on the formation of the creative personality of the artist is analysed.
