Abstract. This study examines the evolutionary transformations that occurred in Ukraine’s higher art education institutions during the second half of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century through the professional activities and leadership models of two prominent rectors — Oleg Semenovych Tymoshenko and Rostyslav Yaroslavovych Pylypchuk. During this period, art education underwent substantial changes driven by profound sociocultural shifts, the gradual transition from a Soviet centralized system to democratic governance principles, and the growing importance of individual leadership in shaping the academic and creative climate of educational institutions. The analysis of Oleg Tymoshenko — an outstanding choral conductor, teacher, and cultural reformer — alongside the work of Rostyslav Pylypchuk — a renowned theatre scholar, researcher, and organizer of the educational process — provides deeper insight into the role of visionary leadership in establishing academic traditions, modernizing curricula, and transforming institutional structures within music and theatre universities. Their professional trajectories demonstrate how personal authority, managerial competence, and creative initiative can influence long-term institutional development.
The scientific novelty of the research lies in a comprehensive comparative analysis of the managerial strategies implemented by these two influential rectors, who acted as crucial agents of institutional transformation in different branches of art education. The study reveals the interrelation between leadership styles, pedagogical principles, and structural reforms that facilitated the shift from a rigid Soviet educational paradigm to an open, culturally oriented, innovation-driven academic environment. Particular attention is devoted to mechanisms of modernization, including the revision of educational standards, stimulation of artistic and research activities, expansion of international cooperation, and introduction of democratic approaches to academic management. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of contemporary trends in the development of art education and provide valuable insights for designing effective, sustainable strategies for managing modern higher education institutions in the arts.
