Анотація

The aim of the paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of the behaviour of European folk puppet characters, to identify the features of synonymy, in particular, to determine the main stage needs and triggers of the protagonists of folk puppet comedies.
Novelty. This article is one of the first attempts in Ukrainian theatre studies to raise the problem of studying European folk puppet theatres and conducting a comparative analysis of these performative practices and cultures. For Ukrainian puppetry, this is an important step, especially for the inscription of the vertep theatre led by its protagonist Cossack into the pan-European historical theatrical process.
Results. The article comprehensively examines the research of leading foreign theatre scholars in the field of the history of European puppet theatre. Particular attention is paid to the texts of original puppet comedies with the participation of leading protagonists of the European puppet theatre. Thus, a comparative analysis of the nature of their actions and deeds in individual episodes of the performances is conducted. The main interests that shape the stage behaviour of puppet characters are identified. A kind of triumvirate is formed - a hierarchy of needs of puppet mascots. Examples from dramatic texts  substantiate the choice of these three triggers and illustrate how they influence the way the characters behave and perform.
Therefore, a common pattern of behaviour for the generalised image of the European folk puppet hero is determined.
The practical significance. The research materials of the article will be useful in courses on theatre history, scenography, costume and dramaturgy.
