Abstract

The purpose of the work is to substantiate the value of drawings and engravings of the late XIX – early XX centuries on postcards as a source of research of the iconography of Kamianets-Podilskyi. Research methodology.Achieving a certain goal and objectives led us to the use mainly general historical and source-research methods. Iconographic methods were used to determine the history of the origin of documentary post cards, to clarify the objects of the image, dating, authorship, the circumstances of creation, as well as to determine their authenticity. The Paleographic method is used to attribute an image object, determine its purpose, and so on.

Results. Artistic compositions of artists of the late XIX – first half of the XX century in particular N. Orda, M. Graham, M. Tshebinsky, V. Hahenmeister and others, on postcards contributed to the formation of the cultural environment of the provincial center and became a valuable iconographic source. They are made at a high artistic level
and contain documented accurate information about the monuments of Ukrainian architecture, artistic and cultural life in Podillya. Today, many of the monuments mentioned in the study have lost their authentic appearance, some are completely destroyed, but continue to live in numerous engravings and drawings by artists of Kamianets-Podilskyi on
postcards and are used in restoration and monument protection.
