GRAPHIC SAMPLES AS SOURCES OF INSPIRATION FOR MONUMENTAL ARTISTS OF EASTERN GALICIA IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XVII CENTURY
Abstract
This article is about the defining role of graphic samples in Western and Central Europe, the Commonwealth and
Eastern Galicia in the XVIII century in formation of local artists. Usage and adaptation of graphic samples in Galician
churches influences formal features of local polychrome realizations and is actual today in formal genetic analysis of
murals in Catholic churches. There are three ways of using engravings by local artists and conformity of realized
polychromes to graphic samples: «repetition of engraving» («contaminatio»), «imitation» («imitatio») and «inspiration»
(«aemulatio»). The last was common in Eastern Galicia. Many examples of polychrome realizations in Galician churches
and their Western and Central European graphic counterparts are given. It shows importance of architectonical treatises
and graphic collections for local masters’ work and inspiration.
